The City of Findlay announces that Police Chief James Mathias will be retiring effective June 12, 2026 following a distinguished 36-year career in law enforcement, including 31 years of service with the City of Findlay.
Chief Mathias earned an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement/Police Science and Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training certification from Terra Technical College. He was sworn in with the Upper Sandusky Police Department in 1990, serving until 1995, and joined the Findlay Police Department later that year.
Throughout his career with the City of Findlay, Chief Mathias served in numerous leadership roles, including Field Training Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant Unit Supervisor Hancock County METRICH Enforcement Unit, Special Services Lieutenant, Patrol Lieutenant, Captain in 2020, and Chief of Police in 2023.
“Chief Mathias has devoted his life to public service, and his impact on our community cannot be overstated,” said Mayor Muryn. “His leadership, integrity, and commitment to professional policing have strengthened public trust and helped ensure Findlay remains a safe community. We are grateful for his decades of service and leadership.”
Among his many achievements, Chief Mathias was named Officer of the Year in 1996 and received the John Seman Award for Employee Excellence in 2014 while serving as Patrol Sergeant. He also served the Fort Findlay Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #20 as Vice President for two years and President for ten years, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to officer advocacy and collaboration.
During his tenure as Chief, he prioritized traffic safety and enforcement efforts targeting impaired driving, implemented department-wide body-worn cameras, and led the adoption of TRULEO software to review body camera footage. This initiative made the Findlay Police Department the first in Ohio to implement this technology and has enhanced officer training by identifying high-stress situations and reinforcing effective deescalation techniques to support safe and professional policing. He also instituted executive leadership training through FBI-LEEDA for all command staff and sergeants, strengthening leadership development within the department.
Reflecting on his career, Chief Mathias expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “Serving the City of Findlay and the Findlay Police Department has been a great privilege,” said Chief Mathias. “I am incredibly proud of the professionalism, dedication, and teamwork of our sworn officers, civilian staff, and command staff. This department is well-prepared for the future, and I have full confidence in those who will continue to lead and serve our community.”
“Chief Mathias leaves behind a strong, forward-thinking department,” said Service-Safety Director Rob Martin. “His focus on leadership development, accountability, and fostering a supportive, caring environment for his team has positioned the Findlay Police Department for continued success.”
The City will work closely with department leadership to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. Additional information regarding next steps will be shared as it becomes available.
The City of Findlay extends its sincere gratitude to Chief James Mathias for his decades of service and dedication to the safety and well-being of the community.
